oh poor jia wei. singapore's only hope. yet she was not in her best form. the result of mental stress once again.
and i couldn't imagine that i actually sat down in front of the television for two consecutive days to watch the table-tennis match. in th first place, i should be studying since the prelim exams are just LESS THAN ONCE MONTH AWAY! but nevertheless, it's just once in a lifetime chance to catch it.
i seriously hope that she will learn from this fruitful competition for future ones. and winning the world number two is definitely a personal accomplishment for her. and not forgetting the 11-0 round with the noisy communist girl. *i was so happy that she was trashed by the world number one in less than half an hour's match* apparently her communistic noise did not frighten her opponent away. every new tactic that she came up with, the chinese player smacked the ball backed without any much difficulty. but there again, even if jia wei is in the gold medal match, she may too lose to the chinese player. i suppose it's the silver medal and the fourth position that matters.
jia wei still has at least 2 to 3 more olympics to go, judging from jun jing hong, who is still competing at the age of 36. and the next few ones should be a better game for her. she deserves a medal. and singapore too. our athletes have been coming home empty handed.
i have been reading some comments on the newspaper of how we should be only sending athletes that have the chance of winning a medal or at least getting into the semi finals. this is results-driven. sporting, the essence of it is the spirit displayed while competing. there is no use using underhand methods to win the match. and i think they'll be sent for some urine tests. the fighting spirit and the hunger for win is what sporting is all about. only then, can we call the athletes winners. so even if athletes go for compeition for exposure sake, the experience they recevied can be passed down to their mentees (if they have) or to their junior. or even their students when they become coach in future. these are things that money can't buy. the experince gained may help the athlete in hs/her personal growth. so long as the athlete can meet the qualifying time, go for it.
all of the sudden, i'm so into the olympics mood.
